Hey Reader,

I ain't gonna lie. This past week has been extremely frustrating (at some points infuriating) for me.

To make a long story short... my Linkedin profile was shut down.

Apparently it may have had something to do with Linkedin's system suspecting my account of using an automated tool to find and connect to other users (I wasn't using any such tool), or their invitations limit. I can't get a solid explanation from Linkedin (which adds to the frustration).

Whatever the case, it's all gone...

  • My carefully crafted profile, the result of dozens of revisions and many hours of tinkering over the years
  • Dozens of professional recommendations collected over years of working and collaborating with colleagues, clients, and partners
  • Hundreds of posts, articles, and comments on other people's posts
  • Over 5,000 contacts

It took me almost 10 years to build the profile up to where it was.

So what can we learn from this?

  1. Back up your data regularly. (no matter what social platform you're investing energy and time into - make sure you get backups of your data. Just in case you get shut out like I did)
  2. Don't rely on one platform for all your lead generation and networking (thankfully I wasn't just relying on Linkedin)
  3. Focus your time and energy on what actually matters to achieve your goals
  4. Allow yourself to feel the emotion - breathe it in, breathe it out. Don't rush to move on without acknowledging what's going on for you.
  5. Check your mindset - it's easy to stay in victim mode but that wouldn't get me very far. Instead, I'm choosing to view this as a massive "Spring clean" of all my Linkedin connections, and now I can be more targeted and strategic about how I build my profile.
  6. Community rocks - I've had my wife, assistant, and friends show up to support me through this. I even had one person post this message in a group we're in: "kinda missing seeing your name popping up on my feed, are you back?" - How sweet is that? I appreciate you all.
  7. Sometimes you just need to start over - with a clean slate. I've set up a new profile but it will take 48-72 hours to become visible (feel free to send me a connect request when it's live).

Here are this week’s 5 resources:

You don’t need 15 different tactics to get new clients from referrals. All you need to get more referrals is to follow the one, straightforward process.

5. Tool of the week: Convertkit
