Hey Reader,

Let's talk about why publishing a book or launching an online course is bad advice for many entrepreneurs.

I've been reading advice from various coaches to "publish a book" or "launch an online course" as a way to build authority.

I get it, but there's one gaping issue...

If you have zero audience before you launch either of those things then you're essentially working from the mindset of "if you build it they will come".

This typically ends up with books and courses being launched to crickets.

Which really sucks after all the time, energy, money invested, right?

An alternative & proven route to successfully launching a product:

1. Build the audience through content before creating the product

2. Create the product that the audience tells you they want and need.

How are you building your audience Reader?

Here are this week’s 5 resources:

  1. Free SEO Training - Thu 25th Mar, 8:30 am AEDT (Sydney)

I see a lot of services businesses, course creators and software companies putting out a tonne of content.

Yet the majority of that content isn't doing the work that was intended.

3 key issues:

  1. no clear keyword strategy
  2. content quality is average at best so people don't read it, and definitely don't share it
  3. content is not optimized for search engines

Want help?

We've got SEO expert Gert Mellak from SEOLeverage joining our next Content Marketing Roundtable to share some tips on how to get your content ranking better in Google.

2. The Art of Blooming Late" by KEVIN EVERS (HBR)

"... it’s never too late to “become” yourself. Aristotle, for example, didn’t fully devote himself to writing and philosophy until he was nearly 50.

There are also benefits to taking a long, winding path to self-fulfillment.

Remember that age typically brings wisdom, resilience, humility, self-knowledge, and creativity.

This is one reason the average age of founders of high-growth start-ups is 45.

Citing the work of developmental psychologist Erik Erikson, Karlgaard writes, the “ages 40 to 64 constitute a unique period where one’s creativity and experience combine with a universal human longing to make our lives matter.”

Tip: Use Outline.com if you can't view the article on HBR's website.

3. Why Bitcoin? Why now? by Byron Goldberg

The world of bitcoin, blockchain, and crypto can be a real mess to decipher and understand.

Especially for us non-tech folk.

This short explanation by Byron Goldberg from Luno provides some good context (and may have even gotten a chuckle or two from me).

Worth a read if you're struggling to get your head around it all (like I was before reading this).

4. When Is It Time to Give Up on a Professional Dream? by Liz Bentley

Sometimes it's difficult to separate what's your own dream from someone else's (family, society, guru, etc.).

For instance, I wrote down on the weekend that one of my bucket list items is to build a $1M company.

Then I started asking myself "why does that matter?" and from there I was able to get into the real reasons like I want financial independence, I want to buy our dream home with my wife, and I want to be able to help my family and other humans.

Now, do I need the $1M company to do all those things?

Not necessarily, but I also like the challenge of being able to prove to myself that I can do it.

Yes the ego part of me wants the external recognition/validation from others that I've achieved something cool too.

As with any dream, sacrifice is required.

In her article, Liz Bentley shared some really powerful questions to ask yourself when considering whether to give up a professional dream or not:

  • Why is this my dream and what is the true reason I want this?
  • Does this dream reflect my values and my abilities?
  • What will I gain when this dream is realized? And what will potentially be sacrificed?

I hope you find these questions and this article useful for your dream too, Reader.
